Mithras Trio
Rachmaninov’s glowing tribute to Tchaikovsky
Sunday, 25th January 2026 – 3.00pm
Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham
The welcome return to Hexham of the Mithras Trio
We are huge fans of the Mithras Trio. They’ve played for us twice already – in 2022 and 2023 – and it went down a storm. Having brought many in our Hexham audience to their feet with performances of big piano trios by Schubert and Dvořák, they return now with Rachmaninov’s second Trio élégiaque, his heartfelt tribute ‘to the memory of a great artist’, Tchaikovsky. It’s music of passion and great depth, and a worthy memorial. An afternoon not to be missed!
Introducing the Mithras Trio
Founded as recently as 2017, the Mithas Trio have established themselves as one of the most exciting and dynamic piano trios playing in the UK today. They have won several international chamber music competitions and given concerts across the UK, continental Europe and North America. They were BBC New Generation Artists from 2021 to 2023, recording and giving live concerts extensively for BBC Radio 3 over that time.
Reviewing their first recording, Eros, in 2023, the Guardian wrote simply, ‘there’s some seriously good chamber music playing on this debut recording’.
Praise and recognition for the Mithras Trio:
First prize at the 2019 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition
First prize at the 67th Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition in 2019
Winners of the 2019 of the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award
2021 to 2023 – BBC New Generation Artists.
‘Go and see them if you get the chance: their live performances are so full of verve, freshness and vitality’ – The New Statesman
‘The trio … dispatched the repertoire with an intensity and expressive range that was often as beguiling as it was exhilarating.’ – The Arts Desk
Programme
Such an interesting programme from the Mithras Trio! It begins with Beethoven’s Kakadu Variations, a piece based on a song from a 1794 play, The Sisters from Prague. Mel Bonis was a French composer working in the late 19th/20th centuries – Mel is short for Mélanie – whose melodic, lyrical music with its echoes of Fauré and Debussy is only now getting the recognition it deserves.
Rachmaninov was just 20 when he wrote his Trio élégiaque no. 2 following the death of his mentor and ally, Tchaikovsky, in 1893. It is deep, haunting music and there are moments when you may feel the presence of Tchaikovsky himself in it. Amazing to think that this hour-long piece was written in just five weeks!
Beethoven Kakadu Variations (Variations on ‘Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu‘), op. 121a
Mel Bonis Soir et Matin, op. 76
Rachmaninov Trio élégiaque no. 2 in D minor, op. 9
